IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING OUR BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Watchung Basketball Recreation and Travel Families,

Hi and welcome to another year of Watchung Recreation and Travel Basketball.  The purpose of this letter is to inform you all of some of the changes in the program this year and to let you all know where we stand with coaches as well as what our needs are.

First of all you will notice a change in the price of the program-both for Travel and Recreation. These prices have not been raised in the nearly ten years I have been involved in the program. Actually, I am not sure if they have been raised in the 20 plus years since the program's inception.  In addition to covering the shortfalls we have had in years past the increase in pricing will allow for some upgrades such as basketball Jerseys for the Rec  program,  new equipment and refs we use for Showcase Saturday and some of the rec programs.

Secondly, as a result of the Garden State Basketball League debacle last year we have agreed to participate in the newly formed JBA League-Jersey Basketball League.  This decision was made after much deliberation and many meetings with both leagues. The primary reason for going with this league was due to the fact that many of our neighboring towns have also committed to the JBA notably Warren, Long Hill, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Westfield and Chatham. There are also numerous other (closer) teams that have either paid or have committed to this new league.  This is not to say that this league will not have hiccups of its own. Nevertheless,  we think that in the long run it will be a better league for the kids in our town. We anticipate the following:

  • ‘B’ level play for both Girls and Boys  as we did in GSBL with the possibility of an ‘A’ game or two
  • 12-14 Game Schedule with possible repeat games
  • Home games still on Friday nights and Saturday days
  • Closer away games

Some of the changes you will see this year are the following:

  • Basketball style jerseys for all the rec teams instead of the tee shirts
  • 3 on 3 tournament in March (Boys and Girls)
  • Pre-Season travel clinics for kids AND coaches
  • Man to Man Defense will be taught starting in 2nd grade

Heading up the 3rd through 6th grade boys rec will be Craig Zaikov with help from Jim Rhyner.  Pete Savulich will head up the 7th/8th Grade boys Rec on Tuesday nights. I have yet to confirm other Rec Level directors

Finally, there are still many needs and holes that need to be filled in order to make this program successful and fun for all the kids or our town.  The biggest need is for the girls program. I would like to encourage more girls to come out and play basketball for both Rec and Travel.  I need the following ASAP:

  • 3rd/4th grade girls recreation level director.
  • A coach to start the 4th grade girls travel and one to do a 5th Grade girls travel.
  • A 6th Grade Boys Head coach

If you can or think you might be able to help out in any way as a coach or assistant coach please attend the Basketball meeting scheduled for Monday October 6th in the all purpose room at Valleyview or shoot me an email with a Cell Number I can reach you on. I look forward to seeing many of you at the meeting and or in our gyms come November.

Sincerely,

Chris Murphy

Watchung Basketball Director
